With 20 years experience coaching gymnastics and a genuine love of the sport, she runs a fantastic &#8216;whole body movement programme&#8217; in three venues in the Tasman district (Upper Moutere, Mapua and Riwaka).<br />
Sam is also a course presenter for GymSports New Zealand (the national gymnastics governing body), teaching the next generation of play gym coaches around New Zealand.</p>
<p>The sessions are called &#8216;whole body movement programme&#8217; because they do just that. By focusing on all seven fundamental movement patterns (swing, spring, landing, rotation, manipulation skills, balance and locomotion) they develop the mind and body. No other sport encompasses all seven movement patterns needed for the global development of a child. Each week the skills progress and change by using different equipment at different heights.<br />
The structure of the sessions is kept the same so that children know what to expect. They start with some group mat time using hand apparatus, music or game depending on the age and focus of the session followed by a few simple stretches to prepare the body and mind for the harder tasks ahead. Then the children move to the equipment and have four or five goes on each circuit. This means the children do not have to stand in queues waiting for their turn, but can keep moving and practicing the skills they have learnt. The session finishes with a cool down as a group on the mats.</p>
<p>All this helps develop the child&#8217;s coordination, confidence and self esteem, teaching them exercise is fun and they are capable of doing all sorts of things as long as they give it a go. One of Sam&#8217;s greatest pleasures is in seeing these children grow to be healthy,  happy people full of enthusiasm and enjoying a wide range of sports.</p>

<p>With 10 years of training and experience behind me I am qualified to teach Modern Jazz, Classical Ballet, Theatre Craft and Musical Theatre, Tap, Dance Exercise and Freestyle Dance.</p>
<p>I have recently passed my Fellowship in Modern Jazz with honours. The highest teaching qualification obtainable in dance and one of only four people in the country with this qualification.</p>
<p>Professional development is something I am totally committed to. It adds to the quality of teaching that is passed onto my students. My breadth of experience ranges from pre-school to adults for recreation and professional training. I have recently been privileged to teach senior students who are now going on to full time professional training..</p>
<p>I currently teach in Nelson and Upper Moutere, along with schools and in the community. The environment that is fostered throughout all the classes is quite unique; something I have taken from my training at Peta Spooner Academy of Dance.</p>

<p>Their preschool classes are great fun &#8211; as the child and parent work together moving around a circuit of activities that includes activities of balance, rolling, spinning, hanging, jumping and more.  Moving to music is often part of the warm up.</p>
<p>After school classes are non competitive allowing a child to move and learn at their own pace.  Basic movement patterns of landings, spring, balance, rotation, locomotion and swing are taught. These movement patterns are a foundation for all sports.</p>

<p>On the ball training is for anyone intimidated by the gym or doesn&#8217;t have access to one.  It is for those who are bored of training alone and want to learn how to exercise in a fun, effective way.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s not about perfection its about being the best you can be and leading a happier, healthier lifestyle.</p>
<p>Most training is outside where we take advantage of Nelson&#8217;s ideal climate.  Training outside is more challenging, burns more calories, is better for your lungs, helps to energise you and gives you natural light and that important vitamin D hit.</p>
<p>During the cooler months we utilise the superb gym facility here at Moutere Hills Community Centre.</p>

<p>After 14 years in London and successfully running my own personal training business I decided it was time to return home to New Zealand.</p>
<p>On my return I worked as a personal trainer at womens gym in Richmond.<br />
I am an experienced runner and have competed in many half and full marathons including London and New York.</p>
